Major Display problems

I seem to be experiencing major display/performance issues when running version 2.2.1 under Ubuntu 7.10.

In a register, I'm trying to pick a date using the popup calendar and it does not appear.  If I move my mouse around, it slowly reveals itself one day at a time, or whatever my mouse rolls over.  

If I switch to another register, it does not display the line items correctly.  I have to scroll up and down and click on a couple before I get to see the new register completely and correctly.

I'm having a great deal of difficulty with this program and was wondering what the problems could be.  Any ideas?
